Codes of Practice

The UK policy on exposure to EMFs is to follow the 1998 ICNIRP guidelines in the terms of the 1999 EU Recommendation, with an additional policy of optimum phasing for power lines.  The details of this are spelled out in two Codes of Practice, which you can download here:

These Codes of Practice are also available from DECC's website (compliance and phasing).  These are the 2012 versions, reissued to include the Northern Ireland Executive in the organisations agreeing them - see more on which countries of the UK different policy documents apply in.

These Codes of Practice reflect the current position on exposure limits in the UK in 2010.  They specify that if that position changes, the Codes of Practice will be updated accordingly. Specifically, the UK exposure limits are derived from ICNIRP 1998 - ICNIRP 2010 has not yet been adopted in the UK.
